Here’s a hint for all of you first time moms: If your child, while nursing, takes a breath, starts choking, and vomits all over you, he or she is sick. Just saying.
Yesterday, I made a late breakfast for Josh and myself. First, I sauted some garlic scapes and roasted red peppers in a little bit of organic butter, then I scrambled in a few farm fresh eggs and chopped spinach. I rounded the meal out with a bagel made from spelt wheat flour. It was a really yummy meal. So, as I’m sitting there, enjoying my eggs, my son starts reaching out for them. Okay, I’ve been feeding him bites off my plate for some time now. Usually I’ll share my rice and beans with him or any fruit that I’m eating. Up until today, he had not had eggs or garlic; he had had spinach and roasted red peppers, so I figured, why not? He only ate maybe five bites or so. He really seemed to enjoy all the flavors.
Fast forward about four hours. Jude had been a bit cranky, wanting to nurse, but not really, but wanting to, but wait, no… Eventually, he settled in. He was just starting to doze off when he started kind of choking. He woke up Saturday night doing the same thing, so I rolled him towards me, and patted his back thinking milk might have gone down the wrong pipe, and all of a sudden, vomit. Gross yellow vomit with pieces of red pepper thrown in for color. I alert Josh, and as he turns his head towards me, Jude vomits again (and again all over me). It came out his nose and mouth, and it was just horrible. Josh rushed over, took Jude from me and put him into the bath tub. I stripped as carefully as possible, and joined my son in the tub. We took a shower together, and then I got him dressed (again). About five minutes later, Josh yells to me that Jude has thrown up again. This time, all over himself and his bedroom carpet. Into the tub once more. About 10 minutes after we’ve gotten him cleaned up from the second vomit explosion, he started signing “milk,” so I sat down to nurse him. A few minutes into that, his little body started wretching, and I guessed that more vomit was on it’s way. This time I was smart and rolled Jude away from me, and he threw up on the bed. Luckily, he didn’t get much on himself that time, so it was easy to clean him up.
Over the following 30 minutes, Jude thew up two more times. The volume decreased significantly each time, and by the last time, it seemed like he was throwing up really thick mucus. He has had a runny nose for a few days, so I think he probably had a belly full of boogers.
Eventually we made it to Wegmans and back. Josh made dinner while I tried to get Jude to sleep. I thought he might make it an early night, but I don’t think he settled in until at least 9pm.
This morning, Jude is as happy as a clam. He did have two ginormous and weird-colored poops before 6am, but I guess that’s to be expected. Josh and I are both hoping that this little virus (or whatever it was) has passed… both for Jude’s sake and ours!
