  • Say “Cheese!”

My digital camera keeps punking out on me. Josh has to keep reformatting the memory card for me because it keeps insisting it’s at capacity when I’ve only actually taken three or four pictures.

    *sigh*

I’m not an artsy person. My stick figure are indistinguishable as such. Despite this sad fact, I’m desperate to hone the creativity I just don’t have (hence, NaNoWriMo). I’ve pretty much given up on drawing, but I would love to write (well!) or take amazing photos.

I’m going to scratch my writing itch during the month of November, and I’ve been trying to take a lot of photos, hoping that I’ll eventually develop (hah!) an eye for photography. However, due to the aforementioned punk’d-out camera, I’ve been on a picture-taking hiatus. So, instead of doing the financially smart thing (buy a new memory card for the camera I have), I’ve decided that I want a super fancy digital camera with manual settings. I mean, yeah, they cost near, or more than, a grand, but hey, what’s another thousand dollars of debt if it helps me explore my creativity?

    *sigh x2*

In truth, I do want a fancy camera. I want to learn the ins and outs of photography, and if nothing else, document Jude’s life with mediocre-good quality photos (and this blog!). But, BUT, I won’t go (further) into debt just for the sake of instant gratification. After all the bills are paid off, I’ll save my pennies, and eventually, I’ll be able to afford a really sweet camera.

Until then… well, I suppose I could have Josh teach me how to reformat our memory card, eh?

In an effort to get our grocery bill down a bit (okay, a lot), Josh and I have decided to scale back on the number of interesting and yummy dishes we eat each week. So, you’ll notice a lot of ‘rice and beans’ and ‘rice and bean burritos’ on this week’s menu and on menus to come. So, here’s what the Frank family is eating this week.

    Breakfast
Oatmeal with raisins, cinnamon, and honey

    Lunch/Dinner
    Rice and Bean Burritos
    Eggs and Bagels
    Chili
    Minestrone Soup
ALTs with Hummus on Spelt Bread
    Vegetable Stir-Fry over Rice

Here’s a question for those of you who follow my weekly menu. Do you prefer a day-by-day, meal-by-meal account of what we’re eating each week, or does a list of lunches/dinners do it for you?

  • NaNoWriMo

    nanowrimo

Last night, after hours of deliberation, I decided to jump on the NaNoWriMo bandwagon.

If the Naked Readhead is willing to give it a shot, there’s no reason why I shouldn’t.

Unless, of course, you consider not having the time to shower on a daily basis a reason not to give it a shot. Whatev… here goes nothing!

Oh-I’d like to take this opportunity to call out Demery and Louise. Hey! Demery and Louise! You two should totally do this! Come on! Sign up!

    Oh this boy of mine.

Last night, Jude was playing on the bed, being silly and making Josh and me laugh. He was giving us zerberts on our faces and bellies and being super freaking adorable. In the midst of all the action, he bumped his head on the wall. He immediatley put his hand to his forehead and whined a bit. I asked him if he bumped his head, he answered in the affirmative. After hugging him and kissing him and making sure he wasn’t hurt, Jude wriggled out of my grip, walked over to the wall, looked at Josh and me…

And he tapped his head on the wall.

Jude then proceeded to put his hand to his head, whine, come over for a hug and kiss, and repeat the process a good dozen times in a row. It was hil-effing-arious. Josh and I couldn’t contain our laughter.

Someone ought to tell this kid the story of the boy who cried wolf. *smile*

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that Jude has figured out this cause/effect relationship or that he can pretend already, but I am. I’m guessing this is a normal stage of child development (can anyone confirm this?), but it’s freaking amazing to witness. Maybe I’m just awed easily, I don’t know. It seems like everyday this kid does something that stops me dead in my tracks. Many days, it’s a high-pitched scream that halts my action, and other days, like yesterday, it’s the realization that this boy of mine is learning right before my eyes.

As my BFF Lauren would say, it’s wicked awesome.

  • Too Tired to Relax

    0

Last night I laid in bed listening to the rain and thinking that it would be really nice to plop down in a comfy chair and relax for a while with a good book and maybe a cup of tea.

Then I realized I was much too tired to relax in such a manner, and I promptly passed out.

    The end.

  • Letter to Jude: Month 17

    4

    Dear Jude,

Today is your 17 month birthday. You decided to humor me and go to bed early, thus allowing this letter to be written on time (for once)…

Well, that’s how this month’s letter began, Monkey. A millisecond after I typed the period at the end of the second sentence, you woke up, and I was unable to complete this letter. So, like many of your monthly letters, this one comes to you a few days late.

I’m not sure when it happened, exactly, but sometime over the past month or so, you grew up. No, you’re not driving or dating yet, but you’re simply not the baby that was born 17 months and 1 day ago. You’ve done a fair amount of growing into yourself over the past 30 days. Your personality has developed even further into something we can only call “you.” Your activity level has increased 10-fold (if that’s even possible), and your ability to communicate and comprehend blows me away.

We spent a fair amount of time reading Pat the Bunny this past month. You LOVE this book and insist that your Papa or I read it over and over and over again at each sitting. (Your, eh, enthusiasm for this book has caused Papa to hide it from you, on occasion). You also request I’m as Quick as a Cricket and Charlie Parker Played Be Bop on a daily basis, and those, too, are read at least half a dozen times every time we sit down to read. I love that you love books. I hope you’ll love Harry Potter as much as I do, Monkey, ’cause I can’t wait to share those stories with you

We haven’t spent quite as much time outside as I would have liked to this month, partly because your nap schedule has been off for the past few weeks. You’ve been waking up later (yay!), which means you nap later, but by the time you get up it’s time for lunch, so we don’t have time to play. Normally we would nap after lunch, but your late morning nap means you don’t go down until 2:30 or 3, and by that time your friends are up and ready to go, but you’re ready for sleep. Hopefully you’ll get back on track over the next week or so.

This is your fancy new raincoat. Our friend, Betsy, found it while she was out shopping and picked it up because she knew I was looking for one for you. While we didn’t play outside much this past month, we did go for quite a few walks in the rain. Let me tell you, this coat came in very handy as we braved the rain and wind that defines Chicago.

You stomp your feet when you dance. Papa and I call them your happy feet. Sometimes, when Papa is laying on the floor and playing with you, you stand on his chest/belly and have happy feet up there. It’s great fun to watch, though painful to be on the receiving end of, I hear.

Lately, when you wake up from your afternoon nap, you like to veg a bit, so we watch Veggies Tales on YouTube together for a few minutes. I love the way you lean your head against mine, and I love how you clap along to your favorite songs.

I’m looking forward to spending the cold winter months with you, snuggled up under blankets, with your favorite book in hand. I can’t wait to build snowmen and play in the snow with you. I think we’re going to have a blast together this winter, Jude. Aren’t you excited?

    Love,
    mama

  • Productivity… You’re Doing it Right

    0

Today I feel more human and useful than I have in at least two weeks. And that’s despite the sore throat and sore neck I’m sporting.

The boy is feeling better. He’s eating better and he’s napping and sleeping better. Josh is working hard at work and helping out a ton around the house. He’s also doing his best to force me to take time away from the boy for myself. I made a menu and actually stuck to it (so far!) this week. Today I took Jude up to Whole Foods to pick up a few items. I also made breakfast and lunch and cleaned my kitchen. This post will make two (2!) for the day.

So, yeah. In short: I rock.

(Does anyone really say “I rock” or “you rock” anymore? Probably not.)

On to Jude news. A couple of posts ago, I mentioned the muffin tin snack tray I set up for Jude and the other kids during the Fourth Annual Frank Family Pumpkin Carving Extravaganza. I’ve been setting this up daily since the party, and Jude LOVES it. He grazes all day on the healthy snacks I put out, picking and choosing what he wants to nosh on at any given moment. I think the tray has contributed significantly to my productivity over the past few days. Sure, I have to replenish it from time to time…add cheese around lunch time…pop it in the fridge before Jude’s afternoon nap…but overall, Jude just helps himself. It has increased his autonomy while freeing me from the tedium of handing him green bean after green bean. He gets to eat as his hunger dictates, and I get to wash dishes without having to stop to dry my hands ever four minutes when he wants yet another cracker.

He gets to eat. I get to wash dishes. Hardly seems like a fair exchange.

So, I’m not the best at keeping my promises. Sorry!

Here’s a list of what we’re eating/have eaten this week:

    Lentil Stir-Fry
    Rice-Stuffed Tomatoes

    PB&H Sandwiches
    ALTs with Hummus
    Rice and Bean Burritos
    Breakfast for Dinner-Eggs and Bagels

Jude’s nap schedule has been a bit off lately, so it has been hard for me to plan out day-by-day meals. Luckily, he has been sleeping soundly when he naps, so I’ve been able to get up and prep lunch/dinner while he sleeps.

In other foody news, next week we’ll be sampling our first gallon of raw milk from one of  the semi-local farms. I’m really excited to try it; I’ll let you all know how it tastes!
