Since moving to Rogers Park, Jude and I have been visiting the library at least once per week. I love reading and have been forcing myself to find more time to indulge in this worthwhile habit. In case anyone is interested, here is a list of what I’ve read over the past two months and what I’m planning to read over the next month or two:
Completed
Buddhism for Mothers by Sarah Napthali
: I really enjoyed this book. It was easy to read and offered suggestions for implementing Buddhist practices into every day parenting situations. Napthali also discusses the different types of meditation and gave an overview of how to go about taking up each type.
The Dark Is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper
(well, four of the five books, at least!): I thought Over Sea, Under Stone,
the first book of the series, was a little slow to start, but the story really fleshes out and gets interesting as it continues through The Dark Is Rising,
Greenwitch,
and The Grey King.
I’m really looking forward to completing the series soon.
In Progress
Unconditional Parenting by Alfie Kohn:
This book is simply amazing. Kohn goes into great detail (and sites many different studies) about why neither rewards nor punishments are good for our children. Sounds radical, eh? This book should definitely be on every single parent’s bookshelf.
On Hold/Reserve
Silver on the Tree by Susan Cooper:
This is the final book of The Dark Is Rising Sequence
Both Eldest and Brisingr
by Christopher Paolini:
I’ve read the first two books of this series before, but want to reread them before moving on the third installment. I own Eragon,
so no need to request that one from the library!
The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud:
This is the first book of The Bartimaeus Trilogy.
I was planning on reserving the second and third books as well, but I’ve apparently reached my “hold limit” at the library. Boo on them.
And finally, two more parenting books:
Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves by Aldort Namoi, Ph.D.
and
Becoming the Parent You Want To Be by Laura Davis
(Author) and Janis Keyser
(Contributor)
So, readers, what’s on your reading list?

I’m glad you’re enjoying the DiR series! I keep planning on getting Eldest out of our library, but every time I go in someone else has it out, and I never can remember to request them to hold it. Oh well. I vaguely remember reading The Amulet of Samarkand when I was pregnant with Bug, but I don’t remember if I liked it or not. I think I was in the midst of morning sickness at the time.
My reading list right now is either Russian or Welsh history, Knowing God by JI Packer, and whatever good fiction I find in the fantasy or mystery or children’s section of the library!
The Dark is Rising series continues to be an old standby favorite of mine. Silver on the Tree was my favorite, and I have a beat-to-hell, but still intact copy if you’d care to borrow it.
I always feel like I should be at the library more (I went frequently when I was pregnant with Stella, and I have a fine for some late returns that is only slightly older than she is). It also doesn’t help that I have yet to have a positive experience with any of the staff at the RP library (except, of course, Renuka the teacher/tutor).
But the inter-library load turnaround wasn’t bad, and it’s a nice facility. Enjoy your reading!
Louise-I’ve heard good things about the Stroud series. I’ll let you know if The Amulet of Samarkand is worth a re-read.
You’re quite the history buff, aren’t you?
Atena-Silver on the Tree is *finally* “available for pickup” at the RP branch (thank goodness!), but thanks so, so much for the offer.
I haven’t met Renuka, but I’ve had a few really nice conversations with one of the women who works at the checkout desk. I wish I knew her name, but I don’t. If you ever feel like taking a stroll down there, let me know! Jude and I would walk to the library every day if we could!
