  • Letter to Jude: Month 25

    0

    Dear Jude,

Your Papa has begged me to stop calculating your age in months. He thinks that now that you’ve turned 2 years old, I should simply say “He’s two,” when the question is asked. But, as I’m sure you’ve picked up by now, Mama loves to drive Papa crazy, so 25 months it is!

    STA70684

Your 25-month birthday came at the end of nine days of non-stop one-on-one time with yours truly. Papa had to lead a mission trip to New Orleans, which meant that you and I were left in each other’s care for more than a week. Eight out of those nine days were absolutely wonderful. We did a lot of fun stuff–played at the park, splashed around at Millennium Park‘s Crown Fountain, enjoyed local produce at Chicago’s Green City Market… the list goes on and on.

    DSC_0169

You’ve recently started counting to ten without prompting and without encouragement. You like to count, “One, two, THREE!” and JUMP while walking with me around the neighborhood. Your affinity for VeggieTales and Silly Song with Larry has only gotten stronger over the past 30 days or so. Occasionally, after having listened to “Larry Radio” for three or four hours straight, I fantasize about sticking screwdrivers in my ears. Mostly though, I just love watching you dance and listening to you sing along to all your favorite songs.

I’ve been really grateful for your help around the house lately. You love to help me by hoisting the dirty laundry UP and into the washer and you follow me around with the Swiffer broom and take care of everything I miss with the regular broom. You haven’t quite figured out that emptying the contents of your snack cup onto the floor doesn’t really help me, but I’m sure you’ll get there. Sooner or later.

You’re going through spurts of playing by yourself more and more. You like to “read” through your books after Papa or I read them to you. Recently, you’ve become interested in painting and other arts and crafts type things, and with your new-found creativity, you made Papa a really great piece of art for Father’s Day. At night, you tell Papa and I that you want to sleep (“seep”), and then you promptly get into bed and lay your head down on my pillow. And, speaking of sleep, you’ve been doing that like a champ lately (*knocks wood*). For that, I thank you.

Every day is a new adventure with you, Jude. Your understanding, your athleticism, and your ability to communicate have increased so much over the past month that I’m left in awe of you at every turn. I love you, Monkey, and I’m on the edge of my seat waiting to see the next amazing thing you do.

    Love,
    Mama

Now that Josh is home from the mission trip to New Orleans that he led, I’m doing my damnedest to get back on the meal-planning wagon. This list is going to be a work-in-progress over the next day or two. I’m looking for filling but light and crisp meals to serve now that the weather has turned HOT. I’m kind of at a loss right now but really wanted to get some kind of menu posted today. Here’s what the (newly reunited!) Frank family is noshing on (so far) this week:

    Breakfast
Oatmeal with Honey and Raisins/Cold Cereal with Milk/Greek Yogurt with Fresh Fruit

    Lunch/Dinner
Homemade Pizza with Spinach-Packed Marinara Sauce
Rice Salad with Black Beans, Green Onions, Corn, and Avocado
Pasta with Spinach-Packed Marinara Sauce and Broccoli
    ALTs (as per usual!)

Check back later tonight for the updated (and hopefully completed) menu for this week!

  • Birthday Party Photo Op

I just realized that I never posted any pictures from Jude’s birthday party. Here are some of the highlights. You can see even more photos of the little guy on his recently updated Flickr set.

Here’s Jude, thinking about all the lovely gifts he was given:

He was very excited about the indoor playtent he received:

    Can’t you tell?

The tee-ball set from Grandma Rhonda and Grandpa Bill was also a big hit:

And in this one, he just looks super cute!

  • An Invitation

    5

Anyone want to visit Chicago next week?

Christ, I hate (HATE) this time of year. Josh is leading a mission trip to New Orleans starting tomorrow, and he won’t be home until Sunday the 21st. Counting tomorrow, that’s NINEFUCKINGDAYS that I’ll be alone and on my own with Jude. Sure, I’m looking forward to the one-on-one time with the boy… Wait? What? Right. I get that every day. I forgot.

In anticipation of next week, I’ve been having mild panic attacks at random times. Lying in bed, trying to sleep–chest feels like it’s constricting. Washing dishes–heart starts pounds. Taking a shower–can’t stop crying.

Yes, I’m needy and co-dependent. I know it and I own it. Also, I’m really nervous about being on my own with Jude (that is, with no break. at all.) for nine days. I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do. I’m scared out of my mind, and I feel like I want to throw up.

So… Anyone want to come and stay with the boy and me next week? I’ve got lasagna and minestrone soup and rice and bean burritos on the menu. I can find an air mattress for you to sleep on and I’ve got clean sheets and towels in the linen closet.

    Any takers?

Also, just wanted to let you all know that I’m now officially accepting all playdate/dinner invitations for the upcoming week (as long as I can get to whatever location in a reasonable amount of time via the CTA).

    HALP!

  • Harnessing Evil

    1

Well, okay, not exactly evil, but today I employed the use of the almighty DVD so that I could finish (re)reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. There. I admitted it. I used VeggieTales as a babysitter. Guilty as charged.

But back on the topic of Harry Potter, I have to say that even after this, my fourth read-through of the final installment of the HP series, I still feel unsatisfied. The Dumbledore of book seven didn’t read like the Dumbledore of the previous six. The final battle, while grand, didn’t unite the houses, though the Sorting Hat asserted that harmony between them was crucial in this, the fight against evil. We saw little of Snape and even less of Ginny, who I think we all assumed was going to be a great asset to Harry in defeating Voldemort. *sigh* The magic just wasn’t there for me this time around.

In non-HP news, Jude and I had another really nice day together. We read and cooked; napped and walked; hugged and wrestled. I’m relieved that, for the time being at least, Jude seems to be feeling good–well-rested, well-fed, and well, heard. My goal for tomorrow is, weather permitting, to get out to the park right after breakfast. We spent just a little time there this afternoon, but the number of kids there (especially older kids) overwhelmed this mama, and we abandoned the playground quickly in favor of a walk around the neighborhood.

How did you spend your Tuesday?

  • Bliss

    3

Days like today wipe away (nearly) all memory of the horribleness of the past few weeks.

Today Jude smiled, laughed, talked, sang, danced, played, napped, read, ate, and loved–a lot. He whined and cried very, very little. Today was Josh’s day off. We spent time together as a family; Josh took Jude out for a while to give me some down time; Jude and I played at the park while Josh played Ultimate. Everyone’s needs were met today, and it was wonderful.

The muffin tin snack tray I assembled for Jude this morning was a huge hit. I filled the twelve compartments with the following yummy snacks: fresh blueberries, strawberries, apples pieces, and grapes, cheddar bunnies, sunflower seeds, raisins, hummus, carrot sticks, cucumber chunks, pita pieces, and chopped almonds. Some of the items were devoured immediately (blueberries and strawberries) while others are still waiting to be consumed (carrot sticks), but the tray, as a whole, served its purpose-it allowed Jude to assert his autonomy and eat as he needed to. It also helped ward off pre-meal meltdowns.

For the first time in weeks, I’m honestly able to say that I’m looking forward to tomorrow. I have a trip to the library planned, and it looks like the weather will be suitable for outdoor play. I’ve already prepped the ingredients for the soup I’m going to make tomorrow, and I have leftover in the fridge for lunch.

Do you feel that? That’s the feeling of pure bliss.

Tomorrow I’m going to take advantage of Josh being home by cooking my little butt off. I planned this week’s menu with next week in mind. Josh will be gone Saturday the 13th through Sunday the 21st, so I’m not going to have much time to cook. Hopefully I’ll be able to stock my freezer with leftovers from this week’s menu.

    Breakfast
Oatmeal with Honey and Raisins or Greek Yogurt with Fresh Fruit

    Lunch/Dinner
    Minestrone Soup
    Lasagna with Eggplant Balls
Raw Soup (I’ll be following these tips)
    Rice and Bean Burritos
ALTs with Hummus and Chips and Salsa
    Homemade Pizza
Veggie Burgers with Baked Potatoes and Steamed Broccoli

    Snacks
Apple Cake Squares or Green Smoothies

This week I’m also going to start putting together a muffin tin worth of snacks for Jude to munch on between meals. I did this for a while late last year, but haven’t assembled one for him in a while. I’m not exactly sure what I’m going to fill each compartment with, but I’ll keep a running list and let you all know how it goes over!

Sunday was an uber-productive day for me. I made fresh basil pesto, hummus, dough, marinara sauce, and eventually, pizza! I hoping to start stocking my freezer a bit, because in less than two weeks, my wonderful hubby will be leaving me for eight days to lead a group of high school and college-aged kids on a mission trip to New Orleans. Boo for being alone for more than a week.

    Breakfast
Oatmeal with Flax, Raisins, and Honey
Cottage Cheese, Fresh Fruit, and Toast
    Cold Cereal with Cow’s Milk

    Lunch/Dinner
Pasta with Fresh Basil Pesto and a Salad
ALT’s with Homemade Hummus and Pitas and a Salad
    Rice and Bean Burritos
Eggplant Balls with Homemade Bread and a Salad
Cumin-Roasted Chickpeas with Rice, Avocado, and a Salad
Veggie Burgers with Baked Potatoes and Broiled Asparagus

  • Running Errands-FAIL

    1

    Oh what a morning.

Sometimes, I think I have (most of) it together. I can play with Jude, run errands, cook, and clean without breaking a sweat. This morning I gave myself a preemptive pat on the back because I had plans for gettin’ stuff DONE, and I felt great about it.

Errand number 1 was to return the portable DVD accessories to the family who loaned the DVD player to us for our trip to PA. They came by to pick up the player a few days ago, but I had missed the pile of extras when I packed the actual device up, so I offered to bring it by today.

Errand number 2 was to finish grocery shopping (I’ll post this week’s menu in a few–promise!). I had planned to go to Dominick’s and the RP Fruit Market. My list wasn’t big, but I needed to stop at both places since the produce at Dominick’s is piss-poor. (What exactly does “piss-poor” mean? Anyone?)

After a late breakfast, I got the boy and myself ready, threw him on my back in the Ergo, grabbed what I needed to, and headed out. When I got to the front door, I noticed it was raining, so I headed back to grab an umbrella. Then I remembered that Josh had taken our last working umbrella with him to work today, so I was SOL. I ran upstairs and knocked on our neighbor’s door to see if I could borrow their umbrella for the morning, but no one was home. This would be FAIL #1 for the morning.

I had no choice but to head out into the rain, but since it was on my way, I decided to stop into Walgreen’s and buy an umbrella. I got there, picked one out, headed up to the counter, and realized I had left my wallet at home. I had the cash that was designated as “grocery money” for the week, so I had to dip into that (mental note: I need to put $6.60 back into the “grocery” envelope). FAIL #2

After Walgreen’s I planned to drop off the DVD accessories. After walking about a block west of Clark, I got the feeling I wasn’t headed in the right direction, so I called Matt (owner of the DVD player) to find out exactly where I needed to go. His place was a bit further away than I thought it was, and since it was raining, I decided that Jude and I would take the bus. Then I remembered that I (still) didn’t have my wallet, and thus, did not have my transit card. FAIL #3.

We (read: I) huffed it south to Matt’s house, returned the accessories, and made the executive decision to food shop at Morse Fresh instead of Dominick’s and the RP Fruit Market. Morse Fresh has good produce and a decent variety of other groceries, I was only about four blocks away from it, and it is located right next to the train station (so I could pay the $2.25 from the grocery money and take the L home), so I thought it made sense. Jude and I shopped there, and while I was able to get the bulk of items on my list, I wasn’t able to find two or three key items for this week’s menu and will therefore need to go back out into this crappy weather later on today. FAIL #4.

Let this be a word of caution to you–preemptive anythings are never a good idea.
