Bike Seat-FAIL
I don’t think I mentioned it much on here, but I have been wanting a bike seat for Jude since the weather warmed up here in Chi-town. Up until this past weekend, I didn’t think I’d be able to get one because my bike frame is only 16 inches, but on Saturday, one of the bike mechanics at a local bike shop said it would fit, so Josh and I went ahead and bought the seat (also, helmets and a bunch of other accessories).
On Monday, we grabbed our helmets and walked down to the bike shop to pick up my bike. I was so excited…until I tried to ride the damn thing. Sonofabitch. The additional weight, in combination with the bike’s new, higher center of gravity, is just too much for me to handle. I can balance just fine once I get going, but stopping and starting are a real problem. Also a problem–Jude LOVES riding in the seat. Do you know how bad it feels to have to take away something that brings him such joy? Horrible. Simply horrible. But I don’t think I’ll ever feel comfortable enough to ride with him in it, so what good is it anyway?
Tomorrow I’m going to call the bike shop and see if I can return the seat. I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to, but If I can’t, I’ll try to sell it on Craigslist. Either way, I think we’re going to opt for a bike trailer for Jude. He won’t sit up as high (good for me, though not as fun for him), so the bike’s center of gravity won’t be affected. On the up side, he’ll be able to take books, snacks, water, etc. with him when we go biking, since the trailer should be enclosed. Wish me luck. Please?

BOOO! I was considering getting one for Ethan, but now I’ll think again. However! Have you considered one of the front-of-the-frame seats? Apparently they don’t affect the center of gravity so much. Hmm.
Hey Erin,
I’m considering a front-loading seat as well. I met a mom who has one on her bike, and she offered to let me swing by and try it out. I’ll definitely do that before making a decision.
