  • Fuzzi Bunz-FAIL

    0

Oh Fuzzi Bunz. How I’ve wanted to be able to love you. You’ve been in our employ for more than two years now, and while you’ve served us to the best of your ability (I’m sure), you’re time with us is through. Today I ordered some Chinese prefolds and wool diaper covers (and the necessary accessories), so soon, you’re being put out to pasture.

The members of the Frank Family are BIG fans of cloth diapers. We’ve been CDing since Jude was a few weeks old. Cloth diapers are not only better for the environment than disposables are, but they also cause less diaper rash and are cute, to boot. Fuzzi Bunz were suggested to us by Jude’s Godmother. She has a daughter who’s about a year older than Jude, so they had had some experience with different types of cloth by the time was born. She said FBs worked well and were easy to use. I totally agree with the “ease of use,” but find them to do a horrible job containing the copious amount of pee my boy puts out.

Maybe that’s the problem. Maybe Jude just pees a lot in a two-hour period. I don’t know. What I do know is that I’ve been double stuffing those suckers since Jude moved into the medium sized FBs, and that wasn’t even able to stop the leaking. Oh–and forget about trying to CD overnight. There’s no way I wouldn’t have to wash our sheets every. single. day. if we tried.

So, we’ve moved on. The ladies on the diapering forum at Mothering suggested prefolds and covers as the most economical way to replace our FBs. We decided to go with the (pricey) wool covers because wool is breathable, naturally antibacterial, and because wool contains natural lanolin, which makes it naturally waterproof (though you do need to treat your covers with lanolin occasionally).

The Chinese prefolds were chosen because they’re the most absorbent of the bunch. Considering how much fluid Jude takes in and puts out, absorbency is a MUST in this house.

Although I spent more money than I would have liked to this morning, I’m really looking forward to trying out our new diapering system. If everything I’ve read about these prefolds and covers is true, we might try overnight cloth diapering!

  • Letter to Jude: Month 27

    0

    Dear Jude,

This letter to you is late. Three days late, to be exact. While I would like to say that I simply haven’t had time to write over the past few days, the truth is that the past few days have been miserable for you and me. I’ve been burnt out that I thought I’d be doing you a real disservice to write to you while I was feeling so low. Yesterday and today have been better, so I decided to sit down with a(nother) cup of coffee and give this writing thing a go.

You’re officially two and a quarter years old. Some days I look at you and can’t believe how big you are and how old you look. Papa and I can’t leave breakables near the edge of the kitchen counter anymore; your reach is too great. For a while I thought that leaving the bottom two shelves of the bookshelves free would be enough. Then you showed me just how wrong I was by ripping the cover off of one of Papa’s books. Now you have three shelves dedicated to your books. For some reason, you don’t rip those.

People keep saying that summer has been on the cool side, here in Chicago. I don’t agree. We’ve had some really beautiful (and HOT) days this year. Though, to be fair, on Friday I had to dress you in jeans and a long-sleeved shirt. Really though, Friday was the exception. And so was Saturday. But besides those two days, we’ve been enjoying some really great weather. We’ve recently started visiting a playground a few blocks away from us. That park has been recently renovated and has a new play structure and a rubberized ground. You love playing at that park, and I love taking you there because you don’t get nearly as dirty as you do if we go to Touhy Park.

It seems redundant to say that your vocabulary is growing, as is your understanding of the spoken word. Likewise, I feel like every month I point a new feat of athleticism you’ve performed. It’s normal, I suppose, that you keep growing and learning, but I’m still amazed by it. Also, your hair is long enough to pull back into a ponytail. That amazes me as well.

I hope that our next month together is more enjoyable than these past few days have been. I also hope that the rest of your two-year molars come in quickly because I suspect they’re a large contributing factor to your crankiness. Whatever happens though, Monkey, try to remember that I love you. Even when I get frustrated and angry, I love you. Even when you’re whining and crying and screaming, I love you. Nothing could ever change that fact.

    Love,
    Mama

A few posts ago I wrote about Jude’s Jekyll and Hyde-type split personality: One minute he’s vegged out in front of the computer screen, eyes glazed over, watching The Incredibles or Finding Nemo; the next he’s up and running (often in circles), yelling and laughing (and sometimes falling) with reckless abandon. Yesterday morning, we walked to a playground on Paulina to play. A few minutes after we arrived, a father and his son (three months older than Jude) arrived. The boys played together for a while, running and climbing on the play structure. The father and I sat back and watched the boys and chatted, and suddenly, in the midst of an unrelated conversation, the father tuned to me and said, “Wow… he’s… crazy.”

Preceding this comment, Jude had run full throttle up the play structure ramp, thrown himself up two separate platforms, grabbed the top of the tunnel at the top of the slide, swung himself back and forth a few times, and finally sent himself flying down the slide. Then he got up and started the sequence all over again.

That sequence of events pretty well sums up life here at the Frank household. It’s a crazy whirlwind of adventure most of the time, so you can’t blame me for relishing in the nearly two hours of uninterrupted calmness The Incredibles afford me.

  • Progress

I find it so interesting to witness Jude’s progression through life. He’s the first child who I’ve been with consistently from his birth to his present. I have cousins who are younger than me, but most of them have always live four or more hours driving distance away. While it was always neat to note how their interests changed and how much they had grown from visit to visit, I simply didn’t have the opportunity to witness life like I do now.

There was a time when Jude couldn’t hold up his head; then he couldn’t crawl. In the blink of an eye he was walking, then running, then jumping and climbing. Now he walks more surefootedly, runs faster, and jumps and climbs higher than ever before. Suddenly he can throw balls and rocks and Frisbees, swing his whiffle ball bat, and do somersaults with ease.

In the beginning, Josh and I set our alarm clock for every two and a half hours during the night so that I could wake up and feed Jude. Then we stretched it out to every three hours, then three and a half, and finally we let him wake on his own to nurse. For a long while he woke up (what seemed like) every two to three hours of his own accord. Recently he has been sleeping for long stretches during the night–another life progression.

Jude used to eat whatever we put in front of him. Now he has desires and cravings all his own. If given the choice between pizza and pasta, he’ll almost always pick both. *smile* Some days he wants apples and other days, pears. When he watches a movie, he wants popcorn to munch on. Upon waking in the morning, he doesn’t want breakfast straight away; instead he wants snacks. He so firmly know what he does want and what he doesn’t that he’ll even occasionally turn down the offer of a smoothie.

Josh and I are progressing through life as well. Josh is figuring out what it is he’s passionate about. His daily bike rides to and from work are slowly transforming him into a real-life bike guy. I’m making progress on a reading list that’s as long as my leg. My yoga practices are becoming both easier and more challenging as I devote time to them each day. For both Josh and I, parenting gently and without coercion is an ideal that we’re making slow progress on.

I have often felt like I didn’t take enough time to be in the present before Jude was born. If you were to ask me what life was like before he made his entrance into this world, I’m not sure I could answer you. As I find myself being more and more aware of what’s going on right now, I also find myself more and more amazed at how we move along our journey of life: with simple, yet amazing, baby steps.

I’m trying to justify spending nearly $60 on these two shirts for Jude. *Shirt 1 and Shirt 2* Encouragement?

  • Haiku

I haven’t slept in what feels likes weeks. In honor of that, I present to you a haiku:

    It is Monday morn.’
    Unable to sleep last night
    I am bleary-eyed.

  • A Mental Pick-Me-Up

    5

Today is not what I would call a “good day.” Jude woke up around 7:20am, and within seconds was whining and crying and screaming and making me want to shove screwdrivers in my ears. Getting out of the house and to the park was a HUGE ordeal. Playtime was marked with bouts of crying and whining. I’m exhausted, both physically and mentally. As soon as the twelve o’clock hour rolls around, I’m going to go to town on the bottle of wine that’s calling to me from my kitchen counter.

What I want to do it bitch and moan about staying at home every day with the boy. I want to garner sympathy from others who understand what a tough job being a mom (or dad!) is. I want to quit, go into my bedroom, shut the door, curl up on the bed and have myself a good cry. But I won’t.

What I’m going to do instead is tell you all about my fantastic son and the things he does that make me smile.

He watches The Incredibles daily. He requests “Movie!” and “‘Corn!” each and every day. And while that piece of information might make you want to throw him into the “Couch Potato” category, I beg you not to. Instead, come over one afternoon and watch as he runs around, in a circle, for what seems like hours on end. Watch as he runs down the hall yelling “I FAST!” and “RUN!” Listen to him as he tells you all about Dash and Jack-Jack and about the rocket he waits patiently to see in the latter half of the film.

Jude likes to practice “oga” with me (yoga, for those who aren’t fluent in ‘toddler’). He asks for the oga video and intermittently mimics the instructor on the screen. He likes to do Downward Dog and Warrior II beside me on my sticky mat. He really likes to climb on top of me when I’m in Plank or crawl underneath me while I try my hardest to do Cat.

Puzzles. Puzzles are Jude’s new favorite indoor toys. My mom got him a few when we went to visit Scranton in May, and Jude is finally taking to them. One of the puzzles has a piece for each letter of the alphabet with a picture of an item beginning with each letter. A-Airplane, B-Books, C-Crown… You get the idea. Usually after nap time, Jude drags my yoga mat over to the far end of the living room, grabs his puzzles, lies down and matches puzzle piece to corresponding picture. Sometimes he asks for my help, other times he’s content to play on his own.

And finally, he naps. Nap time makes me smile. During nap time I can catch up on sleep or read the many blogs I love but tend to neglect. During nap time I can enjoy a cuppa or a piece of cake. During nap time I can read. Or, I can write a blog post…

    Cheers!

I’ve been thinking about my menu for the current week for days now. I’m feeling like I’m stuck in a rut–eating the same foods week after week. I want to expand our diets but don’t know where to begin. I need suggestions for tried and true vegetarian dishes that are yummy, fairly easy/quick to assemble, and that don’t utilize many fancy or exotic ingredients. Can you help?

    Breakfast
Oatmeal with Maple Syrup, Cinnamon, and Fresh Fruit

    Lunch/Dinner
Pasta with Broccoli and Marinara Sauce
    Rice and Bean Burritos
    Quinoa with Sauteed Veggies
    Chickpea Tacos
    Homemade Pizza
    ALTs

At this point, I know I’m short on meals for the week, but I’m just at a loss for what else to make. Ugh. This meal planning thing is tough.
