  • Letter to Jude: Month 29

    0

    Dear Jude,

You have had quite an exciting month–new toys and new friends and a new weekly breakfast date. We’ve all been busy, busy, busy, but you really seem to be enjoying every minute of life.

    DSC_0032

Papa and I went on a bit of a shopping spree for you earlier in the month, and our house is a bit more cluttered because of it! The weather has been up and down… cool for a few weeks and then warm for a day or two. We’ve been spending as much time as possible outdoors and have been making the best of the days we need to spend indoors. When we’re out at the park, you like me to chase you, so I do. You run and I follow behind singing, “I’m gonna get you! I’m gonna get you!” and you giggle. After I catch you once or twice, we switch, and you become the chaser and I the chase-ee. You love to run after me, arms outstretched and yelling, “I get chou! I get chou!” You inevitably catch me, and then we switch roles again. You can play this game for HOURS. I can play it for MINUTES before running out of breath.

A week or two ago, you and I were at the playground on one of the random 70-degree’d days we’ve had recently. Out of no where, you packed up our belongings into our park bag, handed it to me, took me by the hand, and said “Bagel.” You then proceeded to lead me to Charmers Cafe where I ordered you the desired bagel and an apple cider.

This past month, your Papa and I decided to invest in a new camera-a Nikon D90 Digital SLR. It is quite the fancy camera, and you’re my favorite subject to shoot. On any given day, I shoot upwards of 300 photos of you. You’re so handsome and so photogenic–it’s hard to hold my trigger finger back!

Thursdays are your favorite day of the week these days because on Thursday mornings, we having a standing breakfast date with some friends of ours. When you wake up on Thursday mornings, we tell you that we need to hurry and get ready so that we can meet our friends for breakfast. Once you process that information, you spend the remainder of our time at home (and our time traveling to the diner) exclaiming “FRIENDS!” AND “CAKE!” (“Cake” = “Pancake,” in case anyone is wondering.) You like to bring your bucket of Play-Doh or your camera with us when we go out for breakfast. You love taking table-top pictures of our friends’ stomach, and you love it when they indulge your desire for them to create Play-Doh cats for you.

For the most part, the past month has been on the easy side of the spectrum for you and me. I’m doing my best to undo my preconceived notions about parenting and I’m trying really, really hard to be a more level-headed and even-tempered mom for you. You’re understanding more, talking more, singing more, laughing more, reading more, jumping more, etc. You’re growing up. And, while I hate to admit it, this is a good thing. I love that we’re able to do more things together… that you have some sort of direction in mind when we play with your Play-Doh. You request certain toys (ball pit, rice, paint) and certain movies (for instance, Ratatouille at least twice a day) and certain food (bagels. also, pizza). You tell me whether you want to wear your jeans or your bibs, a hoodie or a coat. You know what “tired” and “hungry” feel like, and you have no trouble telling me when those adjectives applies to your state of being.

I loved you as a baby, Monkey. I loved holding you and snuggling with you and being with you all the time. Now, I love you as a toddler. I love playing with you and reading to you and dancing and singing with you. I still love it when you allow me to hold you and snuggle with you, but our relationship has moved past those simple forms of affection. We can talk to each other (a bit, at least) now. You can make your desires known to me in no uncertain terms. There’s a real rhythm to our days, and I love it. I am grateful for the time we get to spend together. I love being with you.

    Love,
    mama

  • A List of People with Whom I Want to Make Out

    3

Some of you may have noticed that And Other Times ceased to exist yesterday from about 7:30pm central time to about 1 or 2am today. Josh was trying to set up a new test site, and when he deleted a folder he had made from that, the public_html folder for this website disappeared as well.

As soon as we both realized that we may have permanently lost more than a year’s worth of content, we started sending out APBs on Twitter and Facebook. Well, scratch that. The first thing Josh did was put a ticket into the helpdesk of our hosting company, midPhase. We weren’t sure if midPhase would be able to retrieve the lost folder, so we were hoping, nay, we were praying that someone was subscribed to my blog via RSS and that that person would be able to copy/paste my blog’s content into a document and send it to me for reposting.

    Last night I got lucky.

Erin, the author of The Fierce Beagle, responded nearly instantly to a direct message I sent her through Twitter. She quickly copy/pasted the past four months of content from my blog and e-mailed it all to me.

Shortly after receiving July’s content from Erin, Red (of The Naked Redhead fame), told me she had all my content from July of LAST YEAR in her RSS feed, and wanted to know what I needed. This morning I woke up to a large .pdf in my inbox that included all the rest of the content I had lost.

And just recently, after a nice breakfast out with my family and some of our friends, I checked Josh’s email and found a reply from midPhase: they were sorry to hear about the missing folder, and they had gone ahead and fixed the problem. My website was up and running.

I cannot tell you how relieved I am to have my website back. Actually, as soon as I realized I would have a copy of my content, a load was lifted off my shoulders. Truthfully, I would love if I could someday, somehow generate income from this website. I know that that’s unlikely to happen, but it is a dream of mine. However, I started writing this blog, and continue to write this blog, for Josh and for Jude and for myself. And, it’s like I told Erin: this is my way of chronicling our life as a family, and I would have been devastated to lose all of it.

So, today I am thankful for friendship. I’m thankful for the kindness of new friends and old friends; thankful for my husband who cares about this website and my writing just as much as I do; and thankful for the techies over at midPhase.

Today, click on the links in this post. Visit the sites of people who are kind and generous and good and helpful. If you can, help me repay these people by reading about their lives and what’s important to then. Take a minute to browse through the hosting services of a company that is prompt and helpful when dealing with their customers’ problems. Today I feel blessed, and I hope to be able to be a blessing others sometime soon.

  • Sweet Things

    1

I think one of the sweetest things Jude does is say “Bless you, Mama” when I sneeze. It’s a little thing; a small nicety, but it melts my heart every time.

Jude will also repeatedly ask “OKAY? OKAY?” if he sees someone who is upset. If he’s the cause of the hurt, he’ll often say “Sorry” without prompting. (What is it with prompting or requiring kids to apologize anyway? Seems kind of worthless if it isn’t said of their own volition. I digress.)

Oh! And anytime Jude is on the phone, talking to someone who’s real or someone who’s pretend, he ends the calls by saying, “Okay. Bye,” and giving the person on the other end a big smooch.

These sweet things are what get me through the rough days. Also, chocolate, coffee, and alcohol. (I kid! I kid!… kind of.)

  • The Newest Love of My Life

    3

Today Josh, Jude, and I welcomed a new member into our family.

I know I’ve been saying that it was too soon and that we just couldn’t justify the expense of adding to our family at this time, but today we took the plunge…

We bought this beautiful Nikon D90 Digital SLR camera. I think I’m in love.

I took about three hundred pictures today. It was amazing to not have to wait five or seven full seconds between shots. Honestly. I thought I was in heaven.

    More to come!

  • If You Like to Talk to Tomatoes…

Listening to Jude sing along to the VeggieTales theme song makes me smile. Every.single.time.

  • Tea Time

    0

Quite a long time ago, Jude learned that the beeping sound that occurs within about fifteen minutes of him waking up in the morning was a signal that Mama’s coffee was ready. At first he would exclaim “Coffee!” when he heard it; now each day he walks over and informs me, “Coffee ready, Mama!” I think it’s really wonderful and really ridiculous.

I’m a fairly permissive parent. I think having fun and playing are really important in life, and I try to fill Jude’s days with as many “yeses” and as few “nos” as possible. That said, I still can’t find it in me to give him a cup of coffee when he asks for it. Lucky for me, he doesn’t mind settling for tea.

For the past week or so, Jude has been drinking upwards of two cups of chamomile tea a day. He doesn’t drink a cup all at once. Often times he’ll request it early in the morning (I think it helps him feel connected to Josh and me while we enjoy our coffee) and he won’t finish it until nap time. His second cup often accompanies lunch but is rarely entirely finished by bed time.

It makes me chuckle and smile every time we go into a cafe and Jude says, “Coffee, Mama. Jude, tea.” I love that he waits patiently while the liquid cools and that he blows into the cup each time before taking a sip. When Jude was little, I would often daydream about taking him to a cafe, perhaps weekly, to have a cup of coffee (me) and do some coloring (him). Lately, Josh and Jude have started having Papa/Son trips to our local comic book store, and after picking out a new issue or trade paperback, they like to go and sit down with their new acquisitions and a sweet treat or special drink at The Common Cup.

And I guess this is just another way of saying that Jude is growing up–getting bigger and developing a more refined palette(?). I’m still pretty heartbroken to not have a newborn or a baby anymore, but this having a toddler thing is really opening up a lot of new doors for having fun. I think I like it.

  • Slippers

I’m getting ready to order these slippers for Jude. I can’t wait for them to arrive… our floors are cold!

  • Play Date!

    2

Yesterday morning, Jude (and I!) had play date with his new friend, Lucy (and her mom!). It sounds a bit kooky, but I’m still reeling from the fantastic time both Jude and I had.

Lucy is a year older than Jude and is very articulate. They had played together at the park two times prior and had gotten along fairly well, but playing in close quarters is a whole ‘nother ball game, in my experience. So, I’ll be honest: I was a bit worried at how things were going to go down. Jude is in a bit of a possessive stage, and his degree of possessiveness is indirectly proportional to the amount of sleep he has recently gotten. The past few weeks have been a bit tough in the sleep/nap department, so yesterday’s play date had a 50/50 change of being great or horrible.

I don’t want to bore you with the play by play of our friends’ three-hour visit, but I think a bullet list of all the fun things the kids did is in order:

    *What they consumed:

      Apples with peanut butter
      Popcorn
      Coffee (moms)
      Chamomile tea (kiddos)

    *What they did:

Played with Play-Doh! Lots of Play-Doh!
Jumped in and out and in and out of the ball pit
      Danced!
Rode on Jude’s play car and rocking caterpillar
Cooked food in Jude’s pretend kitchen
Watched half an hour of Monsters Inc.

Jude had a BLAST and passed out as soon as our friends walked out the door. I had some great (adult!) conversation, which left me really energized for the rest of the day. I’m so, so looking forward to getting together with this family again–hopefully it will happen sooner rather than later!

Now that the weather’s turning cool (and rainy-boo), Jude and I have been stuck indoors more than I would like. Because we’re (almost) condemned to playing indoors all the time, Jude has been watching a fair number of movies per day, and I’ve been having a bit of an internal struggle over that fact. I honestly do believe that children are capable of self-regulating when it comes to pretty much everything: tv, food, video games. Some kids are simply visual learners–they get a lot out of tv shows, movies, and video/computer games. Even though I *know* all that, I was still questioning my not even two-and-a-half year old’s self-regulating ability. Some days he doesn’t even *think* about movies, let alone ask to watch one. Other days, all he wants to do is watch, watch, watch. We’ve been in that “watch, watch, watch” phase for a couple of weeks now, I think in part because of the crummy weather.

In light of our present situation, I recently asked for indoor play suggestions from the people who are on a Unschooling listserv I’m a part of. I got some great suggestions for toys and for different ways for Jude to experience the kind of “big movement” play that he gets outdoors, indoors. Regarding the amount of screen time he’s engaging in, I got what I think is the best piece of advice ever in the history of the world:

“Make sure that the tv/dvd player isn’t the most “sparkly” option in the house.”

So simple, yet so true. Of course the “toy” that plays fun songs and depicts cool-looking talking vegetables is going to get the most attention. I mean, honestly, if you give me the choice of either putting a puzzle together or watching an episode of Firefly, I’ll pick Firefly every time. Or 99% of the time, at least. (I <3 Nathan Fillion.)

Josh and I talked and decided to go shopping for some sparkly, hands-on toys for Jude. What we came home with… well, what we came home with is a ball pit big enough for two children. Also, three hundred (300!!!) plastic balls! Oh! And an indoor sandbox (filled with rice) and a new Play-Doh set. I can’t begin to describe how big a hit these new toys have been.

Jude loves playing in, under, and on top of the ball pit (though we try to discourage the “on top of” part). He loves throwing the plastic balls and putting them in boxes. He loves dumping all three hundred of them on the floor. Jude does not love picking the balls up at the end of the day. This doesn’t surprise me.

The rice/sandbox gets used on the counter while Jude stands happily on his Learning Tower. Sometimes we put a sheet down on the floor and put the box on top of it and the yoga mat along side it. Jude will sit on the yoga mat and play with the rice for minutes upon minutes! The sheet underneath makes for easy cleanup. It’s wonderful I tell ya!

Play-Doh is always a hit around these parts, and this Picnic Set is no different. Jude has finally started experimenting with using more than one color of Play-Doh at a time, and though we no longer have any of the true colors we started with, it makes me happy to see him combining colors and making new things.

So, needless to say, we’ve been having a great time playing at home lately. Earlier today, we hosted a play date at our house, and saying the kids had a blast might be the understatement of the year, but more on that later. Right now it’s lunch time, and my son will not be kept waiting!

    Hope everyone’s enjoying Autumn!
