  • Strider Sports PreBike

    1

We were going to get this awesome Strider Sports PreBike for Jude for his birthday, but with the weather warming up (and his tendency to try to steal borrow other kids’ bikes at every opportunity), we’re getting it a bit early. Check out the awesome info and videos at the Strider Sports website.

  • FAIL. Again.

    1

The past two days have been hellish. Between Jude giving up his nap and Josh being sick, sick, sick, well… let’s just say that we’ve all seen better days.

I thought today was going to be different. Jude slept for 13 (THIRTEEN) hours last night, and it was a SOLID sleep. He woke up happy. (Actually, at around 5am, Jude turned to Josh, said “I happy,” and gave him a kiss.) We had a nice morning–ate some good food… watched a movie. And, we had planned to go to the library with some friends, so both Jude and I had something to look forward to.

And then he pooped. He pooped the sort of poop you just don’t write about on a public blog. It’s just not decent to talk about such things.

So, now he’s in the tub. Because he needed a bath. And we’re holding off on the library until we know for sure whether or not this tummy issue is a one-time thing or if we’ve got a real sickness on our hands. And since I made the mistake of talking to Jude about getting ready to go to the library with our friends, he’s now miserable. Again. Just like he has been the past two days.

    *sigh*

  • Napless in Chicago

    1

This has been a very, very trying week for me for a number of reasons. First, I’m a bit sick. Started off as a sore throat, then moved on to laryngitis, and now I have a bit of congestion. It’s not a horrible bout of sickness, but I still feel kind of run down.

Second, Jude has been a bit grumpy this week. My boy is all about asserting his independence, and jebuschristalmighty, we just haven’t been seeing eye-to-eye much.

Third, I think the boy is giving up the one hour-long nap he takes(ed) each day. Overall this isn’t horrible, but I had no warning. So, on Wednesday, after two really rough days, I was so looking forward to an hour of reading/writing/putzin’ around on the internetz, but Jude just Would. Not. Sleep. Same thing on Thursday. I thought Wednesday refusal to nap was a fluke, but oh no. It was not. Same thing happened. I needed a break, but said break was withheld. At some point I texted Josh and told him I was going to off myself. He promptly came home. Thank Jebus.

(Yesterday was a little different. Jude napped for about an hour early in the morning, but that was quite possibly due to a vomiting episode that preceded the nap. Vomiting takes a lot out of you.)

So today we’re powering through. Josh and Jude played outside while I went to my PT appointment this morning. They came in for lunch, and now we’re planning out the rest of our day. Tomorrow, if the weather is nice (which is doubtful, sadly), we’re going to go to downtown Chicago to see the River get dyed green and watch the St. Patty’s Day Parade. If the weather is crappy… well, we’ll probably do a lot of painting and watch a bunch of movies.

Does anyone have any sage advice for transitioning from one nap to ZERO naps? I’m hoping to get Jude to lie in bed and watch a movie with me after lunch everyday so that he can at least rest a bit, but I’m worried that it’s not going to be enough. Thoughts?

Hello, friends. I have to take a minute here to brag, if that’s okay with you. Normally, even if I don’t get around to posting it here, I menu plan each week. Most of the time, even though I have a plan in place, I stray from that plan, and it’s never for the better. When that happens, we spend money we don’t need to and end up eating less nutritious and less tasty food than we would have if I had just stuck to the plan. This past week was different. We ate exactly what I had planned and left little to go to waste in our fridge. Our meals, for the most part, were healthy and well-rounded. They tasted great. I feel really good about all of this, so I hope you’ll excuse me giving myself a virtual pat on the back here.

Now, onto the upcoming week. Here’s what I have in mind:

    Lunch/Dinner
(Leftover) Veggie chili with homemade bread
Dal over rice (inspired by my friend Aimee’s comment on this old post)
Rice and bean burritos on homemade flour tortillas
Curried channa, potatoes, and tomatoes over basmati rice
    Lentil soup with homemade bread
    Homemade pizza
Breakfast for dinner: Scrambled eggs and cheese with a bagel and a side of fruit
    ALTs

    Snacks
    Green smoothies!
    Ginormous salads-yum!

  • Enticing Spring

    3

On Thursday, Jude and I played outside with our upstairs neighbor friends. I busted out two bottles of bubbles I bought at the end of the warm season last year, and we took turns blowing and chasing the bubbles in an attempt to entice Spring into coming to the Windy City. Soon. Now-ish.

It seems our soapy offering was well-recieved. Yesterday the temperature got up into the mid-40s. We spent nearly an hour outside, running around the playground and rolling in the mud (just Jude on that one). I was amazed at how alive our neighborhood was yesterday. The park was (nearly) packed with kids and their families; people were out walking around; teenagers were riding bikes. It was fantastic. Overall, winter wasn’t so horrible this year in Chicago. Sure, it was cold, but it wasn’t unbearable. It snowed a bit, but we (unfortunately) weren’t hit with any real blizzards. The chances that we’ll see another snow storm before Spring really arrives is great, but still, I can see an end in sight.

Today, there’s a chance we’ll get some rain. The temperature is slated to top out at 45 degrees. I don’t know if we’ll get outside for very long, but we’re going to do our damnedest to get out into the fresh air for at least a bit.

How’s the weather where you are? If it’s still cold, you should think about offering up some bubbles to Spring. She seems to like that.

  • An Update of Sorts

    3

Lately I’ve been feeling a bit down.

Being a full-time, stay at home mom is hard. I’m lucky that Josh and I are full partners in parenting and that he is more than willing to give me as many breaks as I need. I have it better than a lot of people. This I know.

Sometimes though, no amount of empathy or understanding can distract me from the very harsh reality that I’m raising a super excitable not-yet-three-year-old who:

    has an abundance of energy
experiences his emotions in a big way
no matter what his size or apparent cognitive ability, is still only two and three quarters years old and simply cannot understand all that I really, really want him to be able to.

In other words, Jude and I have been having some, uhm, misunderstandings as of late.

I long for warm weather. I can’t help but really, truly believe that life will be so much better and more manageable when we can spend out days outdoors… running around one of the many local parks we frequent or playing on the beach along Lake Michigan, building sandcastles and eating a picnic lunch.

Sometimes a change of scenery can work wonders (or so I tell myself). Bad mood and bad tempers that fester and build indoors dissipate when exposed to fresh air and strong sunlight.

    Dear Spring,
    Please hurry.

    Love,
    Jillian
